Speed Gates: How Does It Work?

Speed Gates

A speed gate is an automated pedestrian barrier with fast-moving wings that open for authorised people and stay shut for everyone else. It combines an identity check, a motorised barrier, and a sensor array that tracks each person through the lane, so every entry is screened without queues.

Step-by-Step: What Happens at the Gate

  1. Credential presentation: The person presents an RFID card, QR code, fingerprint, or face. The reader sends the data to the controller.
  2. Verification: The system checks that the credential is valid for this gate at this time. A denied credential keeps the wings closed and triggers a signal.
  3. Wing activation: On approval, the motors retract or swing the wings open within about a second or two, so a person at normal walking pace does not need to slow down.
  4. Lane monitoring: Infrared sensors track the person from entry to exit. The controller reads the beam sequence to count people, detect direction, and confirm the lane is clear.
  5. Close and reset: The wings close, the gate resets, and the entry is logged with a timestamp.

How Speed Gates Detect Tailgating

A dense sensor array lets the controller spot a second person entering on a single authorisation, movement in the wrong direction, and someone standing in the wing path. It can also separate bags and wheelchairs from extra people to cut false alarms. On misuse, the gate closes, sounds an alarm, and alerts the security desk.

Swing vs Sliding Wings

Swing wings pivot like small doors and suit lobbies, often at lower cost. Sliding wings retract into the cabinet, saving lane space and suiting heavy traffic.

Speed Gates vs Turnstiles

Speed gates are faster, wider, and easier for luggage and wheelchairs. Turnstiles offer more physical resistance. Where forced entry is the threat, pair a speed gate with a full-height turnstile or mantrap.

Power Loss and Maintenance

Gates are set to fail-safe (wings open) or fail-secure (wings locked) per fire code. Clean sensors regularly and service motors and fail-safe operation at least annually.
